Prescribes punishment for murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 — the new criminal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860 with effect from July 1, 2024.

Defines culpable homicide as causing death with the intention of causing death or bodily injury likely to cause death.

Defines murder as culpable homicide that meets any of four specified conditions, and lists five exceptions under which culpable homicide is not murder.

Prescribes the punishment for committing murder as defined under Section 300 of the IPC — death or imprisonment for life, plus fine.

Prescribes punishment for rape — minimum 10 years rigorous imprisonment, extendable to life imprisonment, and fine. Enhanced punishments for aggravated forms.
